Donny Ray Carroll

Donny Ray Carroll passed away unexpectedly on December 29, 2008, in Eureka, CA, at the age of 63. He was born to parents Thelma and Thurman Carroll on April 10, 1945, in Westwood, CA.

When Donny was 2, the family moved from Westwood to Maple Creek. By the time he started school, the family had moved to Eureka, so he attended local Eureka schools. Donny had polio at the age of 4, but he never let that hold him back. He worked for Eureka City Schools for a number of years.

Donny was as member of the California School Employees Association, a union for classified school employees. He joined CSEA in 1981 and was a dedicated member serving in many offices at the local, regional and state levels. He had attended the annual CSEA Convention every year since 1981 with the exception of two years. After his retirement in 2003 from Eureka City Schools, he was elected to the position of District Director for the CSEA Retiree Unit Executive Board and continued to serve until his death. While Donny served on the Retiree Board, his contributions were well thought out and his questions caused everyone to step back and take a closer look at each situation being considered. This resulted in a stronger commitment to their decision by all of the Board members. Donny had a vast knowledge about many things, which seemed to give him unusual insight well worth listening to. He was very proud of the fact that he always took an active role in the debating of conference resolutions for the betterment of CSEA members, which was always his first concern. He was most grateful for all the wonderful members he had an opportunity to meet and become friends with during his many years of involvement with CSEA. He will be deeply missed.

Donny was featured in Time Magazine in 2006. He was a member of the Humboldt County 2008 Grand Jury. He volunteered for SCOP (Sheriff's Citizens on Patrol). He was also a member of the Loyal Order of Moose. Donny had a love for anything that had to do with cars; NASCAR races, old car shows, and drag races. He belonged to Redwood Vintage Rods, and loved driving his 1937 Ford and his 1938 Chevy. Sports were another favorite pastime; he enjoyed watching all the kids play team sports, watching on TV, or going to professional games.

He was pre-deceased by his mother, Thelma; stepfather, Elwood Beagle; sister, Doris Carroll; brothers, Ben Carroll and Greg Beagle; nephew, Dean Carroll; and his longtime friend and work partner, Barney Lough.

Donny is survived by his sister, Carol (Carroll) Oregeron; his sister-in-law, Jaci Carroll (husband Mac Mckinzie); his brother, Marty Beagle (wife Terilyn); sister, Cindy (Beagle) Solinsky. He is also survived by nephews and nieces, Warren Carroll (wife Denise), Polly Carroll, Malinda Carroll, David Carroll, Benjamin Carroll (wife Carla), Matthew Carroll, Princess Carroll, and Daniel Carroll. He was delighted to be involved with his grand nephews Brendan Carroll and Danial Cox, and grand niece Cheona Moon-Carroll. He felt blessed by his many grand and great grand nephews and nieces; also two very special people he treated as his nieces - Kim and Desiree Cobb.

Donny was very close to his brother Ben's family. After his brother's passing, he was always there for Ben's wife Jaci and children.

So many special friends, there is not enough room to name you all: Bill Cobb, Mike Hanrahan, Charles Morf, Dayton Smith, Donna Hill, David Poletski, Gene and Joyce Davenport, Carol Rose. Please - those not listed - you're not forgotten, and we appreciate how much you meant to Donny.

Donny has asked that there be no flowers. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Donny Carroll College Scholarship Trust Fund, P.O. Box 6548, Eureka, CA 95502 or to Donny's favorite charity; , 2942 F Street, Eureka, CA 95501.

There will be celebration of Donny's life at a later date - a notice will appear in the paper.

"During Jaci Carroll's fight with cancer, she made it clear that if she lost the battle, she wanted the ashes of her mother Retha (Davis) Bates and her brother-in-law Donny Carroll to accompany her when she joined her husband Ben Carroll in their crypt at Sunset Memorial. Donny and Retha's ashes were each put inside their own photo pillows and placed in Jaci's coffin - so they are all together with Ben now, as Jaci had wished."
