Dortha B. Swift died peacefully in her sleep Saturday morning, January 25, 2014. She was 93 years old. Born, December 12, 1920 in Stockdale, Texas to Claud and Susan Watkins Bird, Dortha was the last granddaughter of Zadok Watkins and S. R. Bird, descendent of Daniel Bird who settled in Wilson County. She graduated Stockdale High School in 1938. She married Rex R. Swift on July 29, 1939. Dortha and Rex had five children and enjoyed 55 wonderful years together until his death in 1995. Dortha attended Alamo Beauty College and received her beauty license. Instead of working in the world outside the home, she became a domestic engineer and volunteer for Cub Scouts, Brownies, Girl Scouts and a volunteer driver for many other organizations. She was interested in the education of her children and served in the PTA as president and many other offices at Wilshire Elementary, Tynan Elementary, and MacArthur High. After her husband's retirement, Dortha was active in retirement groups and was president of Southern Pacific Employees Retirement Club and served on many committees. She was also a member of NARVE. Dortha was a member of Northridge Park Baptist Church where she helped in the nursery and served on the Let's have a Visit group.

She is preceded in death by her parents, eight siblings, husband, Rex, and granddaughter, Holly Rosser. She is survived by her five children, Robert Swift of Kingsbury and wife, Mary; David Swift; Carol Rosser; Sandra Gidley of Copper Canyon and husband, Dale; and Donna Leidner of Mission and husband, Bill. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will take place at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, January 30, 2014 with visitation one hour prior at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. David Miracle officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributions to a charity of your choice.
