GRAND COTEAU -- Funeral services will be held at a 2 p.m. Mass on Monday, June 9, 2003, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church for John Rodney Guidry, 84, who died at 6:05 a.m. Friday, June 6, in Tri-Community Nursing Center in Palmetto.

Interment will be in Bellevue Memorial Park in Opelousas.

Musical selections will be provided by Rendell James. The songs will be "Amazing Grace," "Psalm 42," "You are Mine," "I Am the Bread of Life," "I Believe" and "Be Not Afraid."

Mr. Guidry was a native and lifelong resident of Sunset. He was a graduate of Sunset High School Class of 1937, and attended Louisiana State University. He retired as a plumbing contractor and also retired from T.H. Harris in Opelousas. Mr. Guidry was very active in the Senior Volunteer Program. He was a parishioner of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Grand Coteau and a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus member.

Mr. Guidry was a veteran of the military, having served in the U.S. Navy from 1938 to 1946 during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of the American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor, Asiatic Fleet Four Stacker Destroyer Association, Arnaudville Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Sunset American Legion and the Disabled American Veteans. Mr. Guidry was also a volunteer recruiter for the Army, Navy and Marines.

Survivors include his wife, Goldie Boudreau Guidry, of Sunset; one son, Darryl Guidry and his wife __, of Ruston; three daughters, __ and her husband, __, of Sunset, __, Guidry of Sunset, and __ Guidry of Lawtell; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walton Guidry and the former Marie Meche, both natives of Grand Coteau; two brothers, George Guidry and Marion Guidry; and three sisters, Clemence Prudhomme, Louise Guidry and Grace Devalcourt.

A rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. today in the funeral home.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. until service time Monday.

Pallbearers will be Erick Scott, David Lagrange; Philip Lagrange, Darryl Guidry, Everett Guidry and Byron Guidry.
