James was the son of Bartley and Mary Ann Watson Harris. During the Civil War, he was enlisted as a PVT on October 6, 1864 in Covington. He served with this regiment until after the end of the war, and was mustered out on September 15, 1865.
After the war, he married Mary Ellen Clark. The couple were the parents of Julia, Charles, William, Harriet, Mary, Bartley Addison and Isabelle Harris. Mr. Harris supported his family by working as an iron moulder. He passed away from the effects of heart failure and hepatic cancer, with a duration of four years.
