Ervin 'Dean' Hagler: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice

Abilene Reporter-News (TX) - Friday, April 23, 2004
Deceased Name: Ervin 'Dean' Hagler
Ervin 'Dean' Hagler, 74, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother in Christ, passed away Tuesday, April 20, 2004 at the Scott and White Memorial Hospital in Temple, Texas.
A celebration of his life will take place at 3:00 p.m. Friday, April 23, 2004, at Southern Hills Church of Christ on Buffalo Gap Road with John P. Shero and Paul Shero officiating, directed by Elliott- Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 Highway 277 South. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park.
Dean was born on May 26, 1929 in Gilmer, Texas, where he graduated from high school at the age of 17 and thereafter moved to Abilene. He then attended Abilene Christian College, now ACU, from 1946 to 1950, where he studied to become a preacher.
On October 1, 1950, Dean married Sonoma Elouise Howard in Sand Hill, Texas at his childhood home. They returned to Abilene where they spent their entire married life. In 1952, Dean started his own paint contracting business, Dean Hagler Inc., which is still in existence today.
At age 13, he committed his life to the Lord, whom he continued to serve wholeheartedly for the remainder of his life. Dean served as an elder of the Baker Heights Church of Christ for 14 years and as a deacon for over 20 years.
Dean was a loving and devoted husband, Daddy, and Granddaddy. He was the kind of grandfather that would work hard all day and then go straight to one of his grandchildren's activities. His abounding love for his family was shown through his many acts of love but mostly through his concern for their spiritual well being. His one true desire for his children, grandchildren and others in his path was to be sure they knew God's plan for eternal life. He poured his heart into writing two bible study books, Getting to Know God and God is in Control, which both reflect his desire to lead others to Christ.
He was past-President of the Abilene Construction Association and an active board member of the YMCA. He served as a trustee of Cherokee Children's Home, Abilene Christian Schools, and as a board member of Christian Homes of Abilene. He was also a founding member of the West Texas Brangus Breeders Association. In addition, Dean founded TCI, now known as The Paint Center; and also developed the subdivision Coronado East. Dean enjoyed his horses, which included two world champion quarter horses; and he was an avid big game hunter and fisherman.
Dean and Sonoma have served as foster parents for Christian Homes for over 23 years, and cared for over 70 babies in their home.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Elton and Florence Hagler; a brother, Norman Hagler; and a niece, Sondra Kay Hagler. He is survived by his beloved wife of over 53 years, Sonoma; their six children, Theresa Lollis and husband George, Tommy Hagler and wife Barbie, Connie Vogler and husband Donny, Deana Morris and husband Robby, John Hagler and wife Tamara, and Kristi Longoria; seventeen grandchildren, Angie Vogler, Courtney Foster, Keri Sanders, Summer Beights, DeAnn Starks, Candice Hagler, Travis Morris, Trent Morris, Jay McDaniel, Charlee Ann Morris, Wesley Hagler, Alexa Longoria, Landon Vogler, Kylee Longoria, Trey Hagler, Deja Talk, Jessica DeNigro; seven great-grandchildren, Carrli Hagler, Avery Foster, Laurel Sanders, Makayla Foster, Grady Starks, Tyler Talk, Carter Sanders, and two on the way. He is also survived by three brothers, Elton Hagler Jr. of Longview, Dock Hagler of Akron, Ohio, and Clinton Hagler of Abilene; two sisters, Joyce Fomby of Longview and Cosette Stewart of Gilmer; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Active pallbearers are Bobbie Wolfe, John Harper, Marty Martinez, Joe Rios, Lynn White, Rodney Nichols, Rex Baugh, and Larry Smith. Honorary pallbearers are Dan Vogler, Wylie Hill, Dwayne Johnson, Bill Crites, Dick Still, Kenneth Cash, Chris Atkins and Leon Floyd. Eulogy will be given by Ron McElyea.
A memorial fund in his honor has been set up benefiting Christian Homes of Abilene. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Christian Homes of Abilene, c/o Nancy Miller, P.O. Box 270, Abilene, Texas 79604-9955.
