Hazel Payne
Hazel Payne, 86, of rural Parsons died at 4:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, 2005, at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin. She had been in failing health but her death was not expected. She was born April 7, 1919, in Mound Valley to Al and Mae (Callahan) Harrison. She grew up and attended schools near Angola. After graduating from high school, she lived in Colorado for a time before moving to New Mexico in 1942. She graduated from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. She married Jay B. Payne on July 4, 1944, in Santa Fe, N.M. Following their marriage they lived in Santa Fe until moving to Hobbs, N.M., in the mid-1950s. She was the first female master plumber in New Mexico and she and her husband owned and operated a plumbing business in Hobbs for many years. After their retirement they lived in Mora and Tucumcari, N.M., until moving to the Parsons area in 2000 to be near her family. He survives of the home. She enjoyed making jewelry and doing upholstery. She also sold real estate. She was an avid reader. While living in Tucumcari, she had been a member of Order of Eastern Star. Survivors include her husband, Jay B. Payne of the home; two sons, Lynn Payne and his wife, Joy, of Camanche, Iowa, and Bobby Payne of Albuquerque, N.M.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Neva Reedy and her husband, Robert, of rural Coffeyville and Dora Knight of Parsons; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers; two sisters; and a grandson, Toby Payne. Following cremation a graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mound Valley Cemetery with the Rev. Lewis Smith officiating. Memorials to Parsons Humane Society may be left at or mailed to Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, 405 Main, Parsons.
