Author, New York Politician. He was a lawyer, an author, former Secretary of State of New York along with many other interesting accomplishments during his lifetime. Before becoming Secretary of State of New York from 1870 to 1873, he was a Republican member of the New York State Assembly from Westchester County, first district in 1869. He was the President of the Belt Line Street Railroad in New York. He wrote “Where Did Life Begin?” in 1883, which documented originate, formulate, and defend the theory of the circumpolar origin of life. From 1880 to 1890, he was a writer of pamphlets on Taxation of Corporate Property, and since 1883, he was an occasional contributor to “Popular Science Monthly”. He was a member of the New York Academy of Anthropology, the New Geological Society, Sons of the American Revolution, Society of American Authors and of the Union League since 1866. He was educated at Oberlin College, studying law under Honorary Daniel B. Taylor, of New York; admitted to the bar in 1866; and practiced law from 1856 to 1868. He was the son of Sewell B. Scribner, fifth cousin of published Charles Scribner, and married Sarah Woodbury Pettingill Scribner, who preceded him in death. They had six children; a daughter Sarah “Marguerite” Scribner Frost was a noted artist and poet. He died at his residence “Inglehurst” in Yonkers, New York.
