SCHOOL PATRONESS MRS. DROWN DIES

Blanche A. Drown, who had a prominent role in the growth of the Long Beach educational system, died Tuesday in her home, 4200 Myrtle Ave.

A native of Missouri, Mrs. Drown came to Long Beach 53 years ago with her husband, Earle Drown, who founded the news agency which bears his name. Elected to the Board of Education in 1933, Mrs. Drown served until 1945, several times as president. She was credited with a leading part in the school rebuilding program following the earthquake.

Mrs. Drown also was president of the citywide, PTA, and of the high school PTA. She was past grand matron, Order of Eastern Star, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, PEO, Ebell Club of Long Beach, First Methodist Church, and was active in the Republican Party.

Surviving is a son, Jack A., of Long Beach, who heads the Drown News Agency, publisher’s distributors, and three grandchildren.

Service will be Thursday at 3 p.m. in Cathedral Chapel, Sunnyside Mausoleum, with Dr. Donald O’Connor of First Methodist Church officiating. Hinton & Son Mortuary is in charge.

The family suggest contributions to a memorial scholarship to be founded in Mrs. Drown’s honor for the Delta Kappa Gamma, an educational sorority for woman teachers. Contributions may be sent to Mrs. Dorothy Buerger, 139 Lindero Ave.
