Russell R. Newbanks
Russell R. Newbanks, 91, a lifelong rural Parsons resident, died at 4:45 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005, at his home. He had been in failing health. He was born Nov. 5, 1913, near McCune to Jesse Clinton and Goldie May (Burggraff) Newbanks. He married Margaret E. Countryman of Parsons on April 26, 1936. She survives of the home. He farmed most of his life and raised cattle and horses. He enjoyed horseback riding and participated in parades as a member of a drill team. He also worked at Kansas Army Ammunition Plant for seven years. He later worked at International Harvester for 35 years until his retirement. During most of that time, he continued to farm. He was a member and deacon of First Presbyterian Church of Parsons, where he had also served on various committees. He was a member of Altamont Lodge No. 69, A.F. & A.M., where he was initiated in November 1945 and raised May 1948. He was awarded a 50-year membership pin in 1998. He was also a member of Progress Chapter No. 49 Order of the Eastern Star and had received a 50-year membership pin in 1998. He was a member of Baxter Springs Miners Camping Club, the original Labette County Sheriff's Posse and the Southeast Kansas Mounted Posse. He was one of the original builders of the Big Hill Trail for horsemen and hikers. For a number of years, he served on the Big Hill Horse Trail Riders Association. Survivors include his wife, Margaret E. Newbanks of the home; a son, Ronal R. Newbanks of Cincinnati; two grandsons, Kevin R. Newbanks and Jeffrey S. Newbanks, both of Cincinnati; a granddaughter, Kia L. Smith of St. Louis; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by twin sons, Kerry Lee and Terry Dee; and a brother, Lloyd C. Newbanks. The service will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church in Parsons with the Rev. Sharlyn DeHaven Gates. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery with Masonic rites given by Altamont Lodge No. 69, A.F. & A.M. Friends may call at their convenience at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home. Memorials to First Presbyterian Church may be left at or mailed to the funeral home, 405 Main, Parsons.
