E.V. Blissard, Jr. died on August 6th, 2013 in Huntsville, Texas. He was born on July 27th, 1923 in Houston to E.V. Blissard and Alma Poole Blissard. His first wife Eleanor Knipp Blissard of Cameron, Texas died in Houston in 1959. His second wife Jean McMullin Blissard of Corning, NY, died while she and E.V. were visiting relatives in Corning in 1997.
He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Blissard Smith and her husband Michael Smith of the Woodlands, grandson Aaron Smith of Austin, and granddaughter Elisabeth Smith of Houston.
In 1942, E.V. was a sophomore at Texas A&M when he joined the Army Air Corp and became a pilot. He was sent to Italy in June of 1944 where he served in the 12th Air Force, 60th Group, 11th Squadron. At the end of the war in Europe in May of 1945, his squadron was moved to Belem, Brazil where he remained until September of 1945. Shortly after returning to the U.S. and receiving his discharge, he entered Southwestern University where he graduated with a degree in economics in January of 1948. Following his marriage to Eleanor Knipp and a semester of graduate work at the University of Texas, he went to work for Shell Pipe Line Corporation in Houston.
E.V. retired from the Shell Oil Company after 34 years of service. His service included the Shell Pipeline Corporation, Shell's Deer Park Refinery and 8 years in Shell's Corporate Headquarters in New York City. He was very pleased when Shell moved their NY offices to Houston in 1970.
Following his retirement in 1982, E.V. was recruited by the National Executive Service Corp to serve as a volunteer consultant to Southern University at their three campuses in Baton Rouge, Shreveport, and New Orleans. He also served as a volunteer consultant to the San Jacinto Council of Girl Scouts to successfully develop an information system covering 60,000 members. E.V. was a member and volunteer of H.E.A.R.T.S Veterans Museum and served on the Board of Walker County Habitat for Humanity.
E.V. and Jean moved to Elkins Lake in 1992 and became active supporters of the Walker County Republican Party. Jean had served as the Republican County Chairman in Fort Bend County in the 1970s and E.V. was a member of the State Republican Executive Committee in the 1980s.
Following Jean's death in 1997, Don and Fran Weil recruited E.V. to become a volunteer instructor in the Walker County Literacy Program where he continued to serve until his death.
A funeral service honoring E.V.'s life will be held at 10:00am on Wednesday, August 14, 2013 in the chapel of Klein Funeral Home Champion Forest, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Houston National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his name may be made to any of the charitable organizations listed above.
