On May 9th 1915 the couple and their children lived at 1622 Park St in Jacksonville FL, when Bessie and three of their children lost their lives in a ferry accident in Jacksonville, Duval, Florida. The lost children were Mary W, their first born, born about 1909 in Georgia, age 6, and Charles who was born in Athens (Clarke) Georgia about 1911, age 4, and baby Eva, age 2, who was born in Georgia in 1913.
Otis, who was the survivor, eventually remarried and had another family. He lived in Tennessee and North Carolina, where he is buried.
"Although the FL death records note her birth in Waco Texas, and Bessie was living in Waco at the 1900 census in the household of her great uncle Dr Parks, it was noted that her birth, and the birth of her parents was in Alabama, as was also stated in the 1910 census by which time she was married to Dr Otis Johnson."
