Wade Busby Memorial brings in record number of donations

By Jessica Domel

(Seguin) -- The Wade Busby Memorial continues to break its own records. Mark Cerda, president of the Wade Busby Memorial, says this year the donations brought in by the Memorial's Casino Night fundraiser beat the record set last year by a long-shot.

"Every year we go into this event thinking there's no way we can outdo what we did last year. At the end of the night when I'm up there on the stage with the last auction item, our staff is very efficient and Laurie (Leach) brings me up a sheet showing me that last year's total was $113,000 and has it broke down. This year's total was $122,294," said Cerda. "That total has gone up to $124,000 from donations that were still coming in."

In addition to bringing in more funds than last year, Cerda says the fundraiser also sold out in record time. Two weeks after event organizers first began selling the tickets, the event was sold out.

"It's a feeling like no other. Knowing that Wade's memory and legacy is living on is a tremendous feeling that we all feel. It's hard to explain, but it is very special," said Cerda. "On behalf of the many volunteers who worked tirelessly for the Wade Busby Memorial Casino Night, we'd like to thank everyone who made this event another record year. It takes hundreds of people to do the kind-of thing that will be realized for years to come. Those hundreds volunteered donated prizes, bought event tickets and spent good money on a variety of items.

He continued, "Wade was a very generous man and ever more so when it came to supporting youth involved in agriculture. Thanks to the generosity of many supporters, Wade's giving can continue. The continual success of the Casino Night will confirm the ability of our organization to help children in Guadalupe and surrounding counties with their agriculture products and allow us to give scholarships."

One-hundred percent of the funds raised at the Wade Busby Memorial each year goes to a group of very deserving kids, according to Cerda. He says the success of this year's fundraiser means even more area students will benefit from the Wade Busby Memorial.

"We'll be able to give out more scholarships and support more kids at the local stock shows," said Cerda. "This was our seventh year, believe it or not, and it was just phenomenal. We were reminiscing on our first year when we first did this deal at Goerke's. That night, we tabulated our event and it was $11,000. We were thinking, 'Wow, we've come a long way. We had 10 auction items (then), and Saturday night I think we had right at 50 live auction items."

Cerda says event organizers will continue to host the annual Casino Night in the late Busby's memory.

"I think what we'd like to do is we'd like to keep as a close-knit family type of event. As far as the energy that you feel, the KC Hall is busting at the seams, but the energy that you feel from everybody in there and the excitement is just unbelievable," said Cerda. "It's hard to explain, you have to really attend one of these events to realize what it's all about."

Those who couldn't make it to this year's fundraiser, but would like to donate to the memorial can mail donations in care of the Wade Busby Memorial to PO Box 736, Marion, Texas, 78124.

The Wade Busby Memorial was created in the fall of 2005 in the memory of Busby, who died at the age of 30. During his lifetime, Cerda says Busby was an avid supporter of agriculture. The goal of the memorial created in his honor is to continue his support of youth in agriculture.
