Isam, son of Eli R. Yates and Martha Shelton Yates was born in the eastern part of Moores Prairie township, Jefferson County, Illinois. Isam Yates and his father, Eli, operated a surface coal mine near Dahlgren for twenty years (ca 1885-1905). The mine was located inside the boundaries of Jefferson County. After coal mining, Isam worked as a U.S. Postal Carrier till he retired.

Isam's first marriage was to Nancy Eleanor Dale on December 9, 1885 in Hamilton County, Illinois. His 2nd marriage was to Ida Josephine Anderson-Tedford April 7, 1903 and his third marriage was to Elmyra Epperson-Carr after 1920. He outlived them all and fathered sixteen children, 5 dying in infancy.

Isam was a member of the Belle Rive Baptist church for 35 years.
