Donald M. Sweet, 83, of Norwalk, died Thursday, June 13, 2013, in Stein Hospice Care Center.

He was born Sept. 7, 1929, in Norwalk, son of the late Myron R. and Ellen (O'Dell) Sweet and was a lifelong area resident. Don was a 1947 graduate of Norwalk High School where he earned 14 varsity letters, and where several school sporting records still stand. He was among the first group of inductees into the Norwalk High School Hall of Fame for Athletics, and attended Drake University from 1947-48 where he lettered in football and basketball.

Don was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving stateside during the Korean War.

He played fast pitch softball for the Norwalk Merchants team and also played on the Ohio Travel League Team. Don retired from Gould (Tenneco) in Milan in 1987 with 25 years of service.

He was a member of Ken Bur Bell Post 41 American Legion, Firelands Post 2743 VFW, Eagles Aerie 711, Elks Lodge 2949, Moose Lodge 2188 in Anna Maria Island, Fla., AMVETS Post 1965, was a charter member of the Bronson Norwalk Conservation Club and was also a member of the Norwalk High School Athletic Boosters Club. Don enjoyed fishing, camping, and sports. Don enjoyed watching his children's, grandchildren's, and great grandchildren's sporting and school events.

He is survived by his children and their partners, Donald M. Sweet Jr. and Bernie Mirtes of Norwalk, Michael S. and Robin Sweet, of Sandusky, Terrie and Rich Meisler, of Norwalk, Donna and Mike Sutter, of Norwalk, and Traci Thurman and Don Burkett, of Norwalk; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and one soon to be born; his sister, Betty Winslow, of Norwalk; and his brother, Myron R. "Mike" Sweet, of Monroeville.

Don was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly (Ritchey) Sweet, in 2004; his great-grandson, Parker Olcott; and by his brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Fern Sweet.

Friends may call 3-8 p.m. Saturday, June 15, at Walker Funeral Home, 98 W. Main St., Norwalk, where funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, June 17. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Norwalk, beside his wife, Beverly. Military graveside services will be conducted by Ken Bur Bell Post 41 American Legion.
