Nita Maud Vandel was born on January 28, 1902 in Lineville, Iowa. Her mother
died when she was quite young so she was raised by her Aunt Silvia Vandel on her farmstead. She met Charles Raymond Hield as his student when he was teaching school while attending Graceland College. They were married in Pleasanton, Iowa on August 7, 1923 and lived there for one year. They also lived in Montrose and Morehead, Iowa before moving to Brooklyn, New York as Charles pursued his teaching career. While in New York, Nita and Charles attended many performances of the Metropolitan Opera and took the family often to Coney Island beach.
After Charles became a full time minister, they moved to
Independence, Missouri where they lived at 1830 Vassar St. Nita worked as a clerk for Macy's department store and as a file clerk for the Internal Revenue Service for five years to help pay for her children's college education. She sang for many years in the RLDS Stone Church Choir and the Messiah Choir and also was a Gray Lady volunteer at the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. For several years she was the Historian for the Vandal family.
Nita passed away on May 2nd, 1987 and is remembered as a kind, gracious and loving person by all who came in contact with her.
