SHREVEPORT, LA - Reverend Monsignor Norman C. Buvens passed away Thursday, October 6, 2005 at Grace Home, Shreveport. A vigil will be held at 7:00 p.m., Sunday, October 9, 2005 in the Cathedral of St. John Berchmans. Msgr. Earl Provenza will preside. Rosary services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday in Many, Louisiana preceding the funeral services. A Funeral Mass celebrating his life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 10, 2005 at St. John the Baptist Church in Many, Louisiana. Officiating will be the Reverend Monsignor Earl V. Provenza, Pastor of Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Bossier City. Concelebrating priest from the Diocese of Shreveport and Alexandria. Burial will follow in St. John the Baptist Cemetery. An 8:00 a.m. Visitation will be held Monday, October 10, 2005 at the Warren Meadows Funeral Home at 355 S. Capital Street in Many, Louisiana.

A native of Many, LA, Msgr. Buvens was born September 30, 1929 to Felix N. Buvens and Mae Davis Buvens. A 1946 graduate of Many High School, he served in the U.S. Army in the Korean Conflict and then he attended Maryhill Seminary. He received his BA from the Pontifical College Josephinum, Worthington, Ohio, in 1964.

Monsignor Buvens was incardinated into the Diocese of Alexandria in 1960. He was ordained to the Holy Priesthood May 30, 1964 by the Apostolic Delegate for Alexandria. Throughout his priesthood, Monsignor has served numerous parishes in the Diocese of Alexandria and the Diocese of Shreveport. He has worked in the capacity as Assistant Pastor; Pastor; a member of the Priest Personnel Board, the College of Consultors, and the Presbyteral Council; Vicar Forane; in the Diocesan Tribunal as Defender of the Bond, Procurator and Advocate. He served also as Chaplain to Knights of Columbus Council 4156 in Leesville, La.; Chaplain to the Serra Club in Monroe, La.; and hospital Chaplain in Christus Schumpert Health Systems, Shreveport.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Felix N. Buvens, brothers, Felix H. Buvens and Francis N. Buvens, and a niece Diane Zara. Survivors are his sister, Bobbie Bailey of Many, LA., a niece, Phyllis Gallagher of Saucier, MS, several great nieces, and many close friends.

Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers will be the priests of the Diocese of Shreveport.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shreveport-Bossier Rescue Mission, 3636 Claiborne Avenue, Shreveport, La. 71109
