Charles Richard "Dick" Shaver, 81, of Independence, Kansas passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at Mercy Hospital in Independence.
He was born January 8, 1932 at Pratt, Kansas the son of Joy H. Shaver and Irma (Calvert) Shaver.
The family moved from Winfield, Kansas to Independence in 1947 to open Calvert's Department Store. Dick graduated from Independence High School and Kansas University. He also attended Independence Junior College.
He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1951 and served in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1954.
On October 4, 1953 he married his high school sweetheart, Dian Trumbly, who died on May 20, 1994.
On March 8, 1996 he was united in marriage to Jana (Ogden) Taylor.
Dick was President and General Manager of the C.R. Calvert Company having been associated with the store in Independence since 1947 when he worked part time during his high school years.
He was passionately fond of Independence and its historical significance in the area. He was instrumental in the founding of Independence Main Street in 1985 when Independence was named one of the first 5 Kansas Main Street cities. He then served as Chairman of the Independence Main Street Board of Directors and had been a member of the Independence Historical Preservation Committee. He also served on the Independence Chamber of Commerce Board and the Board of Directors of the Kansas Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He had been President of the Kansas Retail Council. He was a member of the Epiphany Episcopal Church and had been Vestry Senior Warden. He belonged to Rotary, had been a long-time member of Independence Country Club, and was a member of Dry Holes and Investor's Limited investment clubs.
He was a devoted father and grandfather and loved to spend time a Grand Lake with family and friends.
His hobbies included sailing, which he learned as a member of Sea Scouts in Independence. Other hobbies included traveling, watching grandsons play sports and following Jayhawk basketball.
Survivors include his wife Jana of the home; two daughters, Melissa Hadley (husband Rob) of Independence, Ks and Dr. Melinda Shaver of Hulbert, OK, one stepson Todd Taylor (wife Janelle) of Independence; five grandchildren, Lindy Merritt, Lacey Smith, Tyler Smith, Casey Shaver and Cayla Shaver; five step grandchildren, Adam Taylor, Nicole Taylor, Kyle Taylor, Courtney Taylor and Dylan Taylor; and five great grandchildren, Asher and Oliver Merritt, Savannah Curran, D.J. Shaver and Jaylynn Shaver; two sisters, Nancy Sims (husband Chad) of Plano Texas and Suzanne Corboy (husband Jim) of Castle Rock, Colorado.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son Christopher Shaver and stepson Mark Ogden Taylor.
