Officer Charles Hooks was shot and killed while guarding prisoners at the Juvenile Detention Quarters.
Officer Hooks was in the mess hall of the Detention Quarters, overseeing the evening supper when a 15-year-old prisoner drew a revolver and shot him. The suspect, along with seven other prisoners, escaped. It is unknown how the 15-year-old was able to obtain a revolver.
Officer Hooks was taken to General Hospital in Memphis, where he died from his wounds.
Officer Hooks was survived by his wife, Julia B. Hooks.
