The son of Ichabod V. and Mary (Varnum) Dean and brother of Josiah V. Dean, who served as a Private in Co. C, 18th Mass. Infantry.

Ichabod was a 19 year-old Shoemaker from Middleboro, MA, when he enlisted in that town on May 15, 1861 and was mustered into the 18th Mass. Infantry on August 24, 1861 as a Private in Co. D. On August 30, 1862 at the Second Battle of Bull Run, Dean was struck in the lower part of his back by the hub of a wagon wheel and was absent from the regiment until he returned to duty on April 4, 1864. During his absence from the regiment, which included light duty at the Convalscent Camp at Alexandria, VA, he was admitted to Augur General Hospital in Alexandria on March 10, 1864 due to chronic hepatitis. He returned to duty with the regiment on April 4, 1864. Dean was engaged with the Regiment in the Campaign against Richmond beginning May 1, 1864, including the Battle of the Wilderness where he suffered a slight gunshot wound to the left hand, a shell wound to the leg, and a laceration above the right eye on May 5, 1864. He was admitted to Armory Square Hospital in Washington on May 11, 1864 and transferred to Saterlee General Hospital, Philadelphia on May 20, 1864. He was returned to duty on July 13, 1864. He was mustered out of military service on Sept. 2, 1864 at the expiration of his three year enlistment.

Ichabod resided in Plymouth, MA following his discharge and was employed as a shoemaker and teamster. He married Deborah F. Caswell, the daughter of Timothy and Mary, at Plymouth, MA on Oct. 28, 1865. They were the parents of Fannie E., born Feb. 13, 1866; Fannie E., born June 15, 1867; Valentine, born Oct. 21, 1869; Lucy J., born July 8, 1873; Augustus T., born March 27, 1875; and Carrie L., born Apr. 17, 1877.

Ichabod was residing at 69 South St., Plymouth when he died at age 74 of Toxemia.
