MEMPHIS – Yerger Hunt Clifton, 62, a professor and Jackson native, died of cancer Tuesday at home. Services are 2 p.m. today at Calvary Episcopal Church with graveside services 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Greenwood Cemetery in Jackson. Canale Funeral Home is in charge.
He graduated from Sewanee Military Academy and served as a lieutenant in the Naval Reserves in the 1950s. He received a bachelor’s degree from Duke University, a master’s degree from the University of Virginia and a doctorate from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. He also studied at Washington and Lee University, Oxford University and the University of Munich.
Dr. Yerger taught at the College of William & Mary and the University of Kentucky before joining the faculty of Rhodes College. Dr. Yerger had been professor English literature at Rhodes College since 1965. He was founder and dean of Rhodes’ British Studies at Oxford program, a summertime study-abroad program at Oxford University in England. He was dean of European Studies, a semester-long, study-abroad program.
“Everything about Yerger Clifton was impeccable,” said Rhodes College President James H. Daughdrill Jr. “British Studies bears his hallmark in every way.” “Because he never settled for less than the best, he has enriched the life of this college in lasting ways,” Daughdrill said. In May 1992, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of the South at Sewanee, Tenn. He was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church. He was a lecturer at the Memphis College of Art and a trustee for the Southern Literary Festival.
Survivors include: sister, Betty Sue Clifton Yandell of Memphis. Memorials may be made to Rhodes College, 2000 N Parkway, Memphis, Tenn. 38112 or to any charity.
