A Mass of the Resurrection was held Friday, Oct. 30, in St. Peter's Church, with Rev. Bernard Christman, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Lowville Rural Cemetery with full military honors.
There were no calling hours. Arrangements were with the Donald F. Virkler Funeral Home.
Donations in his memory were made to the St. Peter's Church Hymnal Fund.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley; two sons, Robert E. Dening, Jr. and Dennis, both of Lowville; two daughters, Mrs. John (Colleen) Rzepka, West Monroe, and Mrs. William (Sue) Kiernan. Lowville; 10 grandchildren; a brother, Donald Dening, Lowville; a sister, Mrs. Harold (Muriel) Meiss, Lowville; an aunt, nieces, nephews and cousins. Also surviving Mr. Dening is Maurice Murphy, Lowville, who was raised since childhood with the Dening family.
A brother, Richard Dening, died before him.
He was born in the Town of Martinsburg on Dec. 1, 1921, a son of Daniel and Lena Murphy Dening, and was graduated from Lowville Academy in the Class of 1940.
Mr. Dening was inducted into the service on Aug. 7, 1942. He served as an airplane mechanic with the 9th Air Force in England, France and Germany, and was awarded one battle star, the meritorious service plaque, Good Conduct medal, Victory medal, American Defense medal and European - African - Middle Eastern medal. He received an honorable discharge in January 1946.
He married Shirley E. Boshart Jan. 21, 1946 at St. Peter's Church with Msgr. J.M. Hogan officiating.
Mr. Dening was employed for over 41 years at the Lowville Producers Dairy Cooperative. He spent his last 14 years there as manager, until his retirement in October 1983.
He was a communicant of St. Peter's Church as well as a life member of the Lewis County Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Dening was also a member of the Lowville Elks Lodge and the Hogansville Hunting Club. Lowville Journal and Republican, Wednesday, November 4, 1987
