He was born on Dec. 1, 1949, in Boston, a son of Marie F. (Gavin) Bouchard and the late Francis E. Mayers. Roland proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam era. A resident of Enfield for 24 years, he retired from the State of Connecticut Department of Correction. Roland earned doctorate degrees in theology and sociology. In his leisure time, he enjoyed making and collecting Native American crafts.
Besides his mother, Marie, Roland is survived by four loving sons, Paul Mayers of Enfield, Roland Mayers Jr., and his wife, Cheri, of Nebraska, William Mayers, and his wife, Maggie, of Nebraska, and Gerard Mayers, and his wife, Melissa, of Enfield; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Louis Mayers, and his wife, Katherine, of Enfield, Donald Mayers of Franklin, Mass., and Richard Mayers of Springfield; and a sister, Rose Marie Sell, and her husband, Joseph, of Pawtucket, R.I. In addition to his father, Roland was predeceased by his grandson, Jacob, and a brother, Francis.
His family will receive relatives and friends during calling hours at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Road, Enfield, from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013.
Burial will be private.
