"J. George Koelzer was born 27 June 1885 to Phillip Koelzer and Elizabeth Kuhn, in Detroit Michigan, 6th of 8 children.
Phillip was born in Prussia and arrived in the USA in 1872, along with his father and step mother and two siblings, settling in Wyandotte MI. Phillip was a carpenter by trade and his father Johann was a shoemaker. There were older siblings who stayed in Germany.
George married Myrtle Hill 24 Feb 1911 and together raised 7 children, Paul B. Thompson [Myrtle’s son by a previous marriage], J.George, Phyllis [Holly], Charles, Frederick [Fritz], Phillip and Mable [Smith].
George was Portland’s “CLASSEY TAILOR”, according to some of his ads in the early Portland newspapers.
George first came to Portland around 1904 and worked as an apprentice tailor for Joseph Klute, who had a shop on Kent Street.
1905 found George back in Detroit working as a tailor. 1909 found George back in Portland, opening his own tailor shop at the foot of Kent Street. George would remain in Portland until the passing of his father in 1914, moving back to Detroit to help his mother.
George and Myrtle returned to this area, living in Ionia for a while and then returning to Portland to raise their family. All of the children graduated from Portland High School and lived most of their adult life here, with exception of J. George Jr. who lived in Muskegon MI and Frederick who lived in San Antonio TX.
J. George was not the only Koelzer to find their way to Portland, John A. Koelzer, older brother of J. George was Pastor at Saint Patricks from 1908-1920.
J. George also had a first cousin Mayme Koelzer daughter of Peter Koelzer, who married Michael J. Simon, who also lived in this area.
J. George and Myrtle, along with 6 of their 7 children are buried in the Portland Cemetery."
