Amel Calcaterra was the son of Jaspar Calcaterra and Rosa Esvaldi.

Amel Calcaterra was 16 years old when he along with his friend Tony Hemphill age 19, were kidnapped and murdered.
Their bodies were found buried in a woods south of Royalton, Illinois by a hunter.

The murders and the arrest of Settimi De Santis and Frank Bianco for the murders resulted in an ugly part of West Frankfort, Illinois and surrounding areas' history.

Sadly, the murders stirred an angry mob and rioting ensued for 3 days. By the time the 10th Infantry and four companies of the 7th Reserve regained control, hundreds of foreign born families were homeless, many were injured and some were killed.

May Amel, Tony and the innocent victims of the rioting not be forgotten.
