Richard was born on May 16, 1939 in Decatur and grew up in Lovington, IL, the son of Arvid John and Irene Frieda (Coon) Carlson. He graduated from Lovington High School and was a Veteran of the United States Army. He was an IHSA official for 24 years in football, basketball, and baseball. He retired from Professional Maintenance on October of 2001. He married Nancy C. Hott on August 29, 1987 in Mt. Zion, IL.
Mr. Carlson was survived by his wife, Nancy; sons: Richard D. Carlson Jr. of Crown Point, IN, John M. Carlson of Yorkville, IL; step-daughters: Paula C. Walcher (David) of Decatur, IL, Jodi L. Sennhenn of Decatur, IL; brother: Robert F. Carlson (and wife Shirley) of Panama City, FL; grandchildren: Courtney Carlson, Brandon Walcher, Lacie Walcher, Meghan Sennhenn, and Devin Sennhenn.
Mr. Carlson was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers: Paul, Harold, and Herman Carlson. Richard contracted polio, as did his brother Herman, and they were hospitalized at the same time; but Richard recovered, while Herman did not. Just a little more than a month later, brother Harold died in an automobile accident.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 18, 2010, in the Moran & Goebel Funeral Home with Pastor Todd Tuggle officiating. Visitation was Monday in the funeral home. Burial was in the Keller Cemetery in Lovington, IL. Memorials may be made to the Animal Shelters of Decatur. Moran & Goebel Funeral Home and Cremation Center of 2801 N. Monroe Street, Decatur, IL ministered.
