A Coast Guardsman slipped on an icy trail and plunged 1,000 feet to his death while hiking a treacherous Alaskan mountain in search of its legendary vistas. Derek Winn Russell, 20, disappeared Saturday morning after attempting to climb Mount Barometer, which is near the Coast Guard base on Kodiak Island where he was posted. Mr. Russell joined the Coast Guard in June and was stationed in Kodiak in September, where he served aboard the 378-foot Coast Guard Cutter Munro.

KODIAK, Alaska -- Derek Winn Russell, 20 years, of Kodiak, Alaska, formerly of Hollis, died Dec. 25, 2012 in Kodiak as a result of a tragic hiking accident.
