Gertrude "Viola" Wigand, 97, of Hiawatha, died Tuesday morning, December 25, 2012, at the Medicalodge in Atchison.

She was born in Nortonville, KS, in November 22, 1915, the daughter of Martin and Catherine Schrick Wigand, who preceded her in death. Viola graduated from St. Ann's grade school in 1930 prior to leaving Effingham to do housework in both Atchison and Kansas City, MO, until she went to Stamford, Conn., to keep house for Mary Fawcett (formerly Mary Blair of Atchison) in 1938. After two years, she started taking care of elderly women both in Conn. and New York City. She took courses at Hunter's College studying secretarial work and bookkeeping. Her first job was with a Laundry Fountain Pen Manufacturer, moving on to becoming a secretary for Morrill and Morrill, who drew up specifications to build tankers and freighters, working there 9 years. She then took a position as secretary to the Samuel B. Webb family for 20 years, leaving to retire to Hiawatha, KS in 1981. The Webb family founded the Shelburne Museum in Shelburne, VT (all Americania) situated on 35 acres in Shelburne many years ago.

Miss Wigand was also preceded in death by four sisters: Emma Wohletz, Catherine Noll, Ruth Adcock, and Frances Koenig

Surviving are sister, Edith Hund of Paxico, KS; along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Viola was an auxiliary member of the Legions of Mary, also of Our Lady of Mount Carmel sewing thousands of scapulars for this organization, and Oblate of Handmaids of the Precious Blood in Jemez Springs, NM; an member of the Altar Society of St. Ann where she was a sacristan, also performing many others duties pertaining to St. Ann.

She loved her flowers and gardening, often sharing with friends and neighbors, and always found time to fill the needs of the elderly.

A parish rosary will be recited at St. Ann Catholic Church of Hiawatha, at 10 a.m. Friday, December 28. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 Friday at the Church. Father Sylvester will be the celebrant. Interment will be at St. Ann's Catholic Cemetery, Effingham
