Dr. Amos Joel Carpenter, 73, Indianapolis, Indiana passed away at his home. Dr. Carpenter had been a Professor of Mathematics in the Department of Mathematics and Actuarial Science at Butler University since 1984. During his time at Butler, he served as department head for more than 10 years. He is survived by his wife of 46 years Della P. Carpenter, daughter Boi Carpenter-Mellady, son-in-law Matthew Mellady, granddaughter Brynne Alexandra Mellady, brothers Daniel Carpenter, Kini Carpenter, Michael Carpenter, Sheku Carpenter, and sisters Doris Dakowa and Mangia Carpenter.

Born in Mattru, Sierra Leone, West Africa he attended the Bo School for Boys and later received his post secondary education from the Durham University and the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom and Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. A mathematician, Dr. Carpenter's academic focus was numerical analysis, approximation theory, the theory of computation, parallel and scientific computing. He was a member of numerous professional societies including the Mathematical Association of America, of which he was a previous chair of the Indiana Section. Dr. Carpenter was the recipient of a number of awards including the 2008 Distinguished Service Award for the Indiana Section of the Mathematical Association of America. He published numerous papers and books and lectured internationally.
