James Arthur Hellems Sr was born on New Year's Eve of 1876 in Buffalo, New York, to James A Hellems and Anna Maria Barrett. He was a fireman and engineer in the US Navy during the Spanish American War. The 1900 US Census of Erie County, New York, lists James as living with his uncle's family on Van Renssalaer Street in Buffalo. James married Agnes Celia Healey, around 1907. Their children were James, Agnes, and Gertrude Hellems. The 1920 US Census of Erie County, New York, lists James and Agnes as living on Elk Street in Buffalo with two children still at home. James Hellems Sr died, 13 July 1937, aged 60, in Buffalo. His funeral was held on 15 July at St Brigid's Church and he was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery. Because of his service during the war, his wife and youngest daughter were able to collect a $36 a month pension from the Navy.
