Our Great-Grandmother, Laura Belle (See) Schuman was born April 9, 1872 in Homer, Illinois. Her Mother was Elizabeth See and her Grandparents were George and Sarah See. By all accounts, her childhood was a happy one. In later years, Laura's Mother, Elizabeth, married Ernest Towner - although I am uncertain of the date.

Before Laura married our Great-Grandfather, John Albert Schuman, she was married to Warren Clutter, who was born and raised in Fairmount, IL. Shortly after they married in 1889, they moved to Montana. I do not know much about Mr. Clutter as he died in Montana - November 1892. They had two young boys, Elmer, age two and Hanson, three months old. Laura and her baby sons came back to Illinois after her husband died, to be near her family. She traveled by stagecoach from Missoula, Montana to Fairmount, Illinois. It must have been quite an adventure.

On June 1, 1894, Laura married our Great-Grandfather, John Albert Schuman, and they settled in Fairmount, Illinois. They had three children, who were all born in Fairmount; Franklin William Schuman, born March 25, 1895; Mary Elizabeth Schuman Rains, born September 16, 1897 and our Grandfather, Joseph Albert Schuman, born November 25, 1899.

Laura, John and their family of five children lived on a farm in Fairmount, Illinois - later moving to Fithian, Illinois - before finally settling in Danville, Illinois.

As often told to me by my Grandpa, Dad, Aunt Mary and cousin John - my Grandma Laura was a down-to-earth, hardworking and very courageous woman. She was kind, loving and supportive to everyone. In 1925 she and John moved into a small cottage on the property of our Aunt Mary's home. John died in November 1934 - they were married forty years. Laura enjoyed sewing, gardening, making preserves and jellies and was a wonderful cook. She taught my Grandfather to cook, how to keep house and even how to sew! Laura wanted all of her children to be able to take care of themselves.

I wish I knew more about our Great-Grandmother's life. She was always remembered with great fondness by my Grandfather, Aunt Mary, my Dad and my Cousin, John.

Our Great-Grandmother, Laura, died December 30, 1949 in Danville, Illinois and is buried next to our Great-Grandfather, John Albert Schuman, at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery (now known as Resurrection Catholic Cemetery) in Danville, Illinois.
