Enlisted in U.S. Army January 16, 1941 from Hudson County

Assigned to 168th Infantry Regiment (Iowa National Guard), 34th Infantry Division, "B" Company. "Red Bull Division" at Camp Claiborne, LA in Spring 1941

Rose to rank of Second Lieutenant. Killed near Majola Hill during the Battle of Montecassino when a German tank fired into the mess tent where he was eating. Posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.
