Almeta Mauvene Baker died Feb. 14, 2012, at age 91. She was born June 11, 1920, in Rocky, Okla., the oldest child of Luther and Agnes Gorgas Marshall.
She was raised in Oklahoma City and graduated from Classen High School and Central State College, now Oklahoma Central University, with majors in French and secondary education.
During World War II, she met and married the love of her life, James Austin Baker. She and her husband moved to El Paso in 1949 and remained here until death.
She was an active volunteer with the Grandview Church of Christ, Rusk Elementary and Highland schools, William Beaumont Army Medical Center Red Cross, El Paso Cancer Treatment Center and Sierra Medical Center, finally retiring from her volunteer work in 2007.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Baker, and her sister, Dee James. She is survived by her daughter Carol, her sister Marietta Stone (John), her brother Jerry Marshall (Beth), numerous nieces and nephews and a lifetime's collection of dear friends.
She was buried in Restlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Eastwood Church of Christ Mission Fund, 10104 Album, El Paso TX 79935, or to your favorite charity.
