World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. He received the award from British King George V on January 13, 1915 at Buckingham Palace in London, England for his actions as a lance corporal in the 57th Field Company, Royal Engineers, of the British Army on August 23, 1914 in the Battle of Mons at Jemappes, Belgium during the early stages of World War I. Born in Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, he joined the British Army in 1898. In 1907 he was transferred to the reserves and he became a metalworker. Following the outbreak of World War I in July 1914, he was recalled to active duty and sent to the Western Front and saw action at the Battle of Mons on August 23, 1914. In 1917 he was discharged from the British Army and worked at the Naval Dockyard at Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. In addition to the Victoria Cross, he was awarded the 1914 Star (with "Mons" clasp), the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal (with "MID" emblem). He died in Dundee, Scotland at the age of 67. His Victoria Cross citation reads: "Lance Corporal Jarvis worked for 1½ hours under heavy fire, in full view of the enemy and finally succeeded in firing charges for the demolition of a bridge. He was wounded in the process."
