Murder Victim. Born Victoria Ann Zielinski in Bergen County, New Jersey, she was the daughter of Anthony and Mary Zielinski. A sophomore at Ramsey High School in Mahwah, she achieved the honor role, and also enjoyed a place on the cheerleading squad. On the evening of March 4, 1957, Victoria disappeared while she was walking home from a friend's house. Her brutally bludgeoned body was later discovered in a nearby sand pit. The crime and the trial drew national attention. Her accused murderer, Edgar Smith was convicted and sentenced to death, though through legal machinations, the sentence was never carried out. Smith died in prison in 2017.
