Benjamin Sanders was my great-great grandfather.
From a 1917 newspaper article on death of Levi Lindsey Sanders, grandson of Benjamin, Sr.:
"Levi Lindsey Sanders was born in Jackson Co., Alabama.He was a son of Buck Ben Sanders, a gunsmith, and [his] paternal grandfather Ben Saunders, as the name was originally spelled, was converted from the Catholic faith at a camp meeting in Jackson County."
From Francis W. Johnson, History of Texas and Texans (about 1910), v.4 p. 1746: "Dr. Sanders is the son of Levi L. Sanders, a retired merchant and farmer of Ben Wheeler, himself the son of Benjamin Sanders, a blacksmith of Jackson County, Alabama. He was born in North Carolina, and was the son of an Irishman of that state, who died in Alabama."
Although these statements are based on an old family tradition, research indicates that Benjamin, Sr., was most likely born in North Carolina and that it was his grandfather who was probably the immigrant from Ireland or Scotland.
Census data indicates he was born 1766-1770 and that he died between 1840 and 1850 but probably closer to 1850. He was married twice. By his first wife, whose name is unknown, he had several children, but the only children whose names are known for certain are William and, possibly, a daughter named Martha. The first wife died about 1802 and Benjamin's second wife was Mary Sanders, daughter of Joseph Sanders of Randolph County.

"Phoebe Sanders Lee was my great grandmother. She was born 1813 and died in 1902. Is buried in the Fowler Cemetery at the head of Fowler Cove. She is buried by her daughter, Deborah Emaline Lee Fowler b. Aug 16, 1849 d Feb 3, 1928. Her first child was George Lee that I know little about. Her third child was Mary Angeline Lee b. Dec 22, '1857 d Mar 27, 1924 (My Grandmother) who married Martin Vanburen Davis.
"Some of the family stories I have heard are: Phoebe was well known for her strength. She could stand in a half bushel and should 2 bushels of corn (approx. 100 lbs). She helped bury many of the War dead during the WBS. Her granddaughter, Jency Cagle, remembers her Grandmother Lee stating that she helped bury as many as 16 bodies in one night's time.
"Phoebe Sanders had a brother who lived to be an old age and was called Uncle Mash. Phoebe had a sister named Becky and called Aunt Becky. Phoebe's daughter Deborah was married by a John Sanders, Justice of the Peace."
Benjamin is believed to have been buried on family property in Jackson County, perhaps on the land he purchased in 1834. It is to the west of Haddon Hollow and Haddon Cemetery and is not accessible to the public. The nearest town is Hytop over to the west on Highway 79.
Haddon Cemetery was transcribed by Jane Nichols (descendant of Benjamin's brother Jacob)and her husband Randy on April 2, 1999.

There are many, many rocks with no writing on them and A couple with unreadable writing. It is in a beautiful location with one of the prettiest sceneries I have ever seen.... This is where my 3rd great grandparents, James Madison Bean, Sr. and Hollie Virginia Jane Swearingen Bean are buried in the area of their 160 acre farm. It is said that other members of the Bean and Sanders family are buried here also."

The following directions are from this updated and expanded survey done by James T. Sentell and Ralph W. Thornhill, Aug. 3, 2002 and Aug. 7, 2002:
"Located 2 miles northwest of the end of pavement of Jackson County Road 53, approximately 1 mile northwest of "The Narrows" near the center of Section 31. Township 1 South Range 6 East on the property of Ray Keller. Cemetery is approx. ¼ mile west of the main unpaved road which leads to Tate's cove, on the top and south edge of a ridge in the "middle" of Devers Cove. The field road in Devers Cove is at the foot of this small ridge and passes within approximately 50 yards of the cemetery. Geodetic position
of the cemetery is Long.. 86 degrees 02.01 minutes West, Lat. 34 degrees 54.31 minutes North at an elevation of 763 feet MSL. (also Ala. Grid East coordinates of East- 439,901 and North 1,603,954). Cemetery contains 22 graves (7 marked tombstones and 15 unmarked tombstones)"
