Five times in a row, from 1956 to 1960, he led his team, the Montreal Canadiens, to Stanley Cup championships. He played for the Montreal Canadiens from 1952 to 1963, then with the New York Rangers form 1963 to 65, retired for three years then the St-Louis Blues from 1968 to 1970, the Toronto Maple Leafs from 1970 to 1973, the Boston Bruins in 1973, and finally with the Edmonton Oilers of the World Hockey Association from 1974 to 1975. Then he was a goalie instructor for many teams, including Montreal. He was the first goalie to wear on a regular basis a mask , which he designed himself and played as a 6th offensive player.
