Academy Award Winning Film Director. He was best known for directing the 1976 Oscar winning film "Rocky". He graduated from the prestigious Hotchkiss School and New York University. He started out in the film business as an assistant director on movies by Arthur Penn and Otto Preminger. He made his directorial debut on the 1969 film "Turn on to Love". Moderate success came to him a year later with the low budget film "Joe". In 1973, his film "Save the Tiger" garnered three Academy Award nominations and the Best Actor Oscar for Jack Lemmon. Three years later, he had his greatest success with the film "Rocky" which garnered ten Oscar nominations and both the Best Picture and Best Director Oscars. He went on to direct such films as "Neighbors" (1981), "The Karate Kid" (1984) "The Karate Kid Part II" (1986), "Lean on Me" (1989), "The Karate Kid Part III" (1989), and the last installment of the "Rocky" series "Rocky V" (1990). A documentary on his life, career, and films was produced in 2016. He passed away from pancreatic cancer.
