American Director, Writer and Producer. Born Robert Jonathan Demme, he was an Academy Award-winning director best known for such blockbuster hits as 'Silence Of The Lambs' (1991) and 'Philadelphia' (1993). A graduate from the University of Florida, he first made his debut co-writing the 1971 biker film 'Angels Hard as They Come', with legendary B-movie producer Roger Corman. Demme's solo career launched during the 1980s, due to a string of hits including 'Melvin and Howard' (1980), 'Swing Shift' (1984), 'Something Wild' (1986) and 'Married to the Mob' (1988). After winning best director for 'Silence of the Lambs' in 1991, he would go on to direct and produce several more films, including 'Beloved' (1998), 'The Truth About Charlie' (2002), 'The Manchurian Candidate' (2004), 'Rachel Getting Married' (2008), 'A Master Builder' (2013) and 'Ricki and the Flash' (2015). He was also known for directing concert documentaries and music videos for such artists as Bruce Springsteen, The Pretenders, Talking Heads, Neil Young, Kenny Chesney and Justin Timberlake. Demme, who was the older brother of director Ted Demme, died from complications of esophageal cancer.
