Major League Baseball Player. For eleven seasons (1965 to 1975), he was a pitcher with the San Francisco Giants, Chicago Cubs, Minnesota Twins and Texas Rangers. Born William Alfred Hands, he made his initial mark on the baseball diamond during his years at Rutherford High School in New Jersey. Signed by the San Francisco Giants as an amateur free agent in 1959, he attended Ohio Wesleyan University prior to making his Major League debut on June 3, 1965. After he was acquired by the Cubs, he worked his way into Chicago's starting rotation and in 1968, he yielded a sixteen win season. The next year (1969), he produced a career-high twenty wins, with a standout 2.49 ERA, in 300 innings-pitched. While with the Cubs, he was part of a starting rotation which also comprised of Ferguson Jenkins and Ken Holtzman. He retired in 1975 following stints with the Minnesota Twins and Texas Rangers. In 374 career regular season games, he compiled a 111 win, 110 loss record, with a lifetime 3.35 ERA, in 1,951 innings pitched. After his departure from baseball, he owned and operated a service station in New York for several decades.
