Singer, Songwriter and Producer. Born Raynoma Mayberry to the parents of Lucille and Ashby Mayberry. She may be best known as the ex-wife of Berry Gordy, Jr., it was said to have been a stormy thirty-year relationship, her first husband was Charles Liles. During the early years of Motown, together she and Gordy formed Rayber Music Writing Company, followed by their first recording label, Tamla; a music publishing Company, Jobete, and in 1961, the Motown label. She wrote arrangements, sang background vocals and prepared professional lead sheets for copywrites and recording dates, she quickly became known as Mother Motown. She worked with many notable artists such as: Jackie Wilson, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, the Temptations, Diana Ross and many more. After she and Berry divorced, she then married, Eddie Singleton and formed a record label, Shrine, which was based in Washington, DC., the label proved unsuccessful, she then returned to Motown in 1968. Under this partnership with Motown, one of the most successful projects was Rockwell’s Top 10 album, Somebody’s Watching Me, in which she served as executive producer (1984). The Bibliography, Berry, Me, and Motown was published in 1990.
