Actress. Her name at birth was Anna Marie Duke. It was changed to Patty by her managers when she started acting. In the late 1950s, she landed a role on the soap opera 'The Brighter Day' and also appeared in television commercials. In 1959, she appeared on The $64,000 Question and won $32,000 in the category of spelling. That same year, she appeared in a television adaptation of 'Meet Me in St. Louis' as Tootie Smith. In 1959, she starred alongside Anne Bancroft in the Broadway play 'The Miracle Worker', which ran for nearly two years. The play was made into a film in 1962, for which Duke received the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. At that time, she was the youngest person to receive an Academy Award in a competitive category. In 1963, she starred in 'The Patty Duke Show', portraying both main characters: Patricia "Patty" Lane, a fun-loving American teenager and her 'prim and proper' "identical cousin", Catherine "Cathy" Lane. The series lasted for three seasons and earned her an Emmy Award nomination. Some of the other films she appeared in were 'Billie' (1965), 'Valley of the Dolls' (1967), 'You'll Like My Mother' (1972), 'The Swarm' (1978), 'By Design' (1982), 'Willy/Milly' (1986), 'Prelude to a Kiss' (1982). 'Kimberly' (1999), 'Falling In Love With The Girl Next Door' (2006) and 'Amazing Love' (2012). In addition to 'The Patty Duke Show', she also appeared in dozens of television shows and made-for-TV movies. In 1982, she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and was the first celebrity to go public with her illness. She became an activist for numerous mental health causes. From 1985 through 1988, she served as president of the Screen Actors Guild. On August 17, 2004, Duke received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her contributions to the motion picture industry.

Gravesite Details

She was cremated and her ashes were interred at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d'Alene. It is believed that she is buried next to her mother, Frances Duke. The marker for her father, John, is a cenotaph, as he is buried in a Veterans cemetery.
