Born in France, he emmigrated to Canada before coming to Nebraska sometime before 1880. He married three times, first to Elizabeth Buhmer, second to Mary Walters, third to Elizabeth Walters. His parents were Maximillian & Elizabeth (Leiby) Baechler.

Other info indicates that he might have actually been born on July 24, 1837, despite what his gravestone reads.
