James married Mary Eugenia Pittman in 1885. They had two children, both girls--Ruby Mae Howell and Gladie Howell.
As most of the men in Georgia, James served in the Confederate army for four years.
His obituary appeared in the Georgia paper on Saturday, June 12, 1909, and reads as follows:
MORTUARY
Hon. J. H. Howell, Austell, Ga.
Austell, Ga. June 11.--(Special.)--Hon. James Hampton Howell, a prominent citizen of Cobb county, died at his home last night at 12 o'clock by heart failure.
He leaves a wife and two daughters, Misses Ruby Mae and Cladie; two brothers, W. A. and H. C. Howell; one sister, Mrs. M. A. Davies, all of Austell.
Mr. Howell was 64 years old and served as a soldier in the confederate army for four years.
Funeral and burial service will be at the Howell cemetery, at Riverside, Saturday at 10 o'clock.
