William Burdine Howell was born in Campbell (now Cobb) County, Georgia, the ninth of eleven children born to Isaac and Margaret (Tucker) Howell.

On 2 Sept 1847, William married Alvina Jane Sewell. They had ten children:

During the Civil War, William joined the Confederate Army, Company K, 41st Regiment, Campbell Salt Springs Guards. He first appears on the Muster Roll on 4 March 1862. He was captured at Vicksburg, Mississippi on 4 July 1863, but was paroled on 6 July 1863. His name last appears on the Muster Roll for 31 Dec 1863 as "present".

William died on 16 Nov 1893 and is buried next to his wife in the Howell Cemetery.
