Ruth was born on August 3, 1966 at Columbia Hospital for Women in Washington, D.C. She was the youngest daughter of Gerald L. and Mary Ellen (Gray) Wiley. She grew up in Arlington, Va. and attended Wakefield High School for most of her four years, but graduated early from the alternative education center, Hoffman-Boston, in late 1983/early 1984. Not long after graduating, she moved to California, as her dream had always been to live there. She lived several years in the Los Angeles area as well as in San Diego.

In 1987, she moved back to Arlington. She went to work for the Madison Group at the Madison Hotel in Washington, D.C. She worked for the late hotelier Marshall Coyne, who built the hotel in 1963. Meanwhile, she met an old classmate, John Motley and they eventually got married on July 10, 1993 in Manassas, Va., where they resided for several years. They later divorced. After living in Morgantown, W. Va. for a short time, she moved to the Myrtle Beach, S.C. area where her parents had retired.

This is where she met her second husband, Joey Snell. She eventually moved with him back to his hometown of Fayetteville, N.C. They had a son, Matthew Christian, in 1997 and he was very precious to her. Ruth and Joey got married on January 1, 2000 in Garden City, S.C.

Ruth's passion had always been creating film, in part influenced by her father's career as a motion picture photographer/videographer for the National Geographic Society. When she was in high school, she took a course in making videos at the Arlington County Career Center and her love of filmmaking was ignited. In the early 2000's, she enrolled in the Film School at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. She was very happy attending classes there and felt like she was fulfilling her dreams.

Ruth's other passions were skating (roller and ice), creating art, her beloved cats, and music. She was especially drawn to lyrics in songs. She wrote some of her own songs, which she was very proud of. Some of her favorite artists were Roger Waters of Pink Floyd, Joni Mitchell, and Paul Rodgers of Bad Company. She loved to sing and enjoyed singing with her sister, Meg.

Ruth eventually separated from Joey and moved with Matthew to live with her parents in the last year of her life. She was very dedicated to her son.

Tragically, Ruth suffered for many years from the disease of bipolar disorder and depression. She completed suicide on September 8, 2006 in Murrells Inlet, S.C. She is greatly missed by her family and friends. She took a piece of all of their hearts with her. However, they know that she is with Jesus, and is finally at peace.

She was predeceased by her paternal grandparents, Clarence O. and Minnie E. (Wagner) Wiley, and her maternal grandparents, W. Ralph and Jean G. (Hamilton) Gray.
