This cemetery is the main burial ground for the town of Stornoway and surrounding areas, and was opened in the late 19th century. It is located off the A866 road, which leads from Stornoway to the airport and the district of Point. Its main road access is from the A866 at the top of Oliver's Brae, between the last houses on the right (when coming up from the town) and the Free Church Continuing on the left, where the village of Sandwick begins.
The cemetery is laid out down a slope, and extends from the main road towards the shore. Pedestrian access is available through a gate from the shore, and through the adjacent Old Sandwick Cemetery. Dogs are permitted, but only if on a short lead.
Notable graves are the row of eleven Commonwealth War Graves Commission stones, not far from the top of the cemetery, for 11 servicemen who drowned in the sinking of HMY Iolaire on 1st January 1919. The majority of the stones are for men, Known unto God. The Iolaire tragedy claimed 201 lives, mostly islanders from Lewis and Harris.
