Saint Mary's:
The first Roman Catholic Church in Elora was built in 1860 on McNab Street. The Roman Catholic cemetery in Elora was consecrated around the time of the building of the new church, Saint Mary the Immaculate, built in 1870 at 267 Geddes Street, Elora. The cemetery was located on lands purchased from Sem Wissler, across the Grand River from the church. Wissler had also sold land for The Elora Municipal Cemetery, beginning in 1864, directly across the street.
Saint Joseph's:
In 1872 St. Joesph's Catholic parish at Fergus (3 miles east of Elora, built 1854) became a satellite mission of the larger congregation at St. Mary's where most weddings, confirmations and funerals were being held. Having outgrown its tiny church graveyard (used approx. 1854-1872) at Fergus, interments was also switched to the much larger St. Mary's Catholic cemetery. Some bodies were even moved from Fergus to Elora as land around St. Joseph's Church was re-claimed for parking. Some stones remained (leaning up against the building) as did some of the graves near the grassy slope fronting St. Joseph's. Years later both parish names, Saint Mary the Immaculate & Saint Joseph, would be included in the Elora Catholic Cemetery name, although locally it is best known as simply, "St. Mary's"
Some of the Parish priests have included:
1920s Fr. Sullivan
1940s-1950s Fr. Vincent Matthew Shea
1960-1961 Fr. Thomas Gerald Hill
1962 - ? Fr. Gillen
1970s - (early) Fr. Schefter
1970s - (later) Fr. Clifford Day
1980s - Fr. Jordan
1990s - Fr. Sherratt
2014 Fr. Rafal Tomon
