The Brighton Cemetery in Polk County Missouri was started by Jesse and Providence Mitchell in around 1836 when they settled near Brighton, MO.
Jesse was the child of Morris and Elizabeth Hoosong Mitchell who came to Polk County with a number of their children. Jesse and Providence established the Brighton Cemetery and the Providence Church, a small Methodist church of which Jesse served as pastor. Many of the original settlers to this area are buried in the Brighton Cemetery which is still an active cemetery today.
