My branch of this family originated in Marburg, Hesse, Germany. Three brothers from this family emigrated to North America on the British ship "Dolphin," landing in New York City in May 1773. These Arculariuses settled in New York City, where the family became so prominent that a street was named after them (it no longer exists). From New York City my ancestors emigrated to Rock Island County, Illinois, where they farmed and prospered.

The word "Arcularius" is Latin for "puts forth little boxes." There are several fungi and marine snails with "arcularius" in their names, most notably nassarius arcularius arcularius, a shell discovered and cataloged by the typologist Linnaeus in Madagascar in 1758.

There are still Arcularius families (mostly descendants of Edward Frederick Arcularius, who married three times) living in Rock Island County, IL. A group of Arcularius families lives in the Mammoth Lakes, California, area. In the same area is the Arcularius Ranch (photograph) is a famous fly-fishing resort (no web page, but the address is Route 1, Box 230, Mammoth Lakes, CA 93546).

A collection of 30,000 names of German immigrants in Pennsylvania
from 1727 to 1776, a book republished in 1975 by Genealogical Publishing Company of Baltimore, contains a ship manifest that lists Johann Heinrich and his brother Philip Jacob as passengers. The ship was Brigantine Dolphin, from London, Arthur Hill commanding. It arrived May 31, 1773. It is suggested that their brother Johann George also came, but was not listed because he was still a child.(Keeling fgs.)
