***** Lee, I feel so bad I don't have any of your pics to post. Sharon has them stored for me. I will get one on here soon! It's been 42 years ago today when you went missing, though I wasn't informed about it until the 8th. We had just seen each other a few weeks before when you got that 2nd R&R in Hawaii. I remember that little short calendar was almost filled in, because you were down to the final few weeks. I always wonder what your life would have been. You wanted us to move to San Francisco, and Louie had to a job lined up. But.. it wasn't to be. Though you never had an earthly mom, my mom is in heaven now, and I'm sure the two of you are hanging out. She kept her phone number and post office box for decades, she never really believed it was you they found. The last songs we listened to on the radio were Hey Jude by the Beatles while we were getting ready to leave for the airport in Hawaii, and then once we got there, I remember as you were boarding the plane that song 'I'm leaving on a jet plane' came on. I cried my eyes out. I watched the plane until it disappeared in the distance. Well, just wanted to let you know that you are missed. With all my love, Karen

Sharon Smedley - Redding, CA
A true hero that made the ultimate sacrifice
Marion Roach, "Lee" to his friends and family. Lee was a fun loving guy that was an avid snooker player, and enjoyed duck hunting. He was raised by foster parents Carmen and Claudia Sigler that loved him as their own. He had two brothers, Pete and Steve whom he loved and appreciated. On 1968 Lee enlisted in the Army. After completing boot camp at Ft. Lewis Washington, and basic training in Alabama he was given orders to go to Germany, but he requested that his orders be changed and volunteered to go to Vietnam, thinking it would save someone else from going there. While in Vietnam Lee was a helicopter crew chief. During his first R & R to Hawaii in June of 1969, Lee married his hometown girlfriend, Karen.
Karen would see him again in October as he managed to fanagle another R & R to Hawaii ! He enjoyed helicopters, and wanted to find a job as a helicopter mechanic upon his return home. He was looking forward to coming home and spending time with his new wife, family and friends, and was excited about the prospect of seeing his young son Steven Lee Roach.
On November 4, 1969, with less than 30 days left to serve and one month shy of his 21st birthday, his helicopter was reported Missing In Action. They were flying from Binh Hoa to Ban Me Thout in South Vietnam. In typical fashion (because he was a short-timer and didn't have to fly) Lee had volunteered for the mission that day, probably jumping at the chance to fly in the helicopter, and making the best of his time left there.
On August 28, 1973 his family was informed that the helicopter had been located and the bodies of all 8 men aboard were recovered. During the years that Lee was missing, his wife and sister in law became involved with The National League of Families of American POWS and MIAS in Southeast Asia. It was always a great comfort to his family and the other families knowing that people cared enough to get involved in writing letters and wearing the braclets with the names of their loved ones. After hearing the news that the helicopter had been located, many of the people throughout the country of all ages, that wore a POW/MIA bracelet in Lee's honor sent the bracelets to us.

It so was overwhelming to get the bracelets, seeing how worn many of them were ! We went to thank each person that may see this, for your dedication, and kindness - it meant more than you know. As a child Lee attended a Christian church and wrote home expressing the desire to begin attending that church again. Because he never made it home, we can rest assured that he is in heaven with God. Thank you for taking the time to visit this page and May God Bless You! And to you Lee, you are missed and will always be remembered for your sacrifice.
We love you!
